Pearls look good on every woman. They can complement anything from a plain little black dress to a dramatic wedding gown. If you take good care of them, they can be passed to someone you love and last for many lifetimes. So whether you have natural or cultured ones, continue reading. Below are some essential tips on how you can keep the luster of pearl jewelry for a long time.
Rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, etc. – all of them should be placed inside their own pouches. These pouches should be made from silk, cotton or linen. Placing them inside a jewelry box is also fine, as long as they have their own lined compartments. Placing them next to pieces out of metal or those with gemstones in them can scratch a pearl’s delicate surface.
Harsh chemicals can dull their natural luster and even damage their surface. And some of these chemicals are often found in your perfume, hairspray, makeup and other cosmetics which you use. That’s why you should apply them first before you put on your pearl jewelry. After wearing them, wipe with a soft dry cloth to remove any residue of such products on these precious items.
There are hard or rough fabric types that can also scratch your pearls. If you’re wearing garbs out of these fabrics, it’s best to skip wearing your precious pearls. Additionally, you should keep them from rubbing against metal zippers, hooks, buttons and the likes. Your jewelry must be the last thing you put on when dressing. When undressing, do the reverse: they should be the very first thing you remove.
While the natural oils on your skin can enhance the luster of your jewelry, the acids on your skin can damage it. That’s why you should remember to wipe them clean each time before storing them. Occasionally, you may use a damp cloth for a thorough cleaning. But make sure you let them completely dry naturally before storage. Do not use any cleaning solution except something that’s formulated for pearls.
Remove your jewelry prior to doing activities which will cause you to perspire – house cleaning, working out, going to hot and humid areas, etc. Doing so will save them from getting in contact with your sweat unnecessarily, as well as dirt or chemicals. Remove pearl necklaces before swimming as prolonged exposure to water can weaken the silk string.
Speaking of necklaces, it’s best to have them restrung every 1 to 2 years by an experienced jeweler. Usually, silk thread is used, although nylon has become an acceptable alternative these days. See to it that knots are made between pearls to spare them from rubbing against each other. And as added precaution, these knots will also keep the pieces from falling all together should the string break.
